Center for Spiritual Living (CSL), Chicago is a trans-denominational church dedicated to assisting people in awakening to their own love, passion and power through joy and celebration. Reverend Mark Anthony Lord is the founder and Spiritual Director with a radical message of self-love and acceptance. "CSL is the fulfillment of a twelve-year vision of a spiritual community where we consciously awaken to Spirit within - healing our beliefs in separation which allows us to experience our Oneness with all."

REV IT UP
Life is NOW!
stonetower1.jpg

"Life is now. There was never a time when your life was not now, nor will there ever be"
Eckhart Tolle ~ The Power of Now

"God, help me stop thinking about the past or the future and just be here now!" We so desire a life of peace. And, yet, our inability to simply be here now is so . . . well, NOT possible now. Let's face it. We are addicted to thinking. We are addicted to worrying, to obsessing, to figuring it out and to running scenes of struggle, strife, anger and fear - over and over in our mind.

Our thinking faculty is like a muscle that is meant to only be used when needed, like your biceps or hamstrings.  Imagine your biceps or hamstrings working morning, noon and night, even in your dreams. Within no time, they would most likely be spasming due to lack of rest. At least with your muscles, you can run to the doctor to get help in calming and supporting them while they return to their natural state of readiness.

"The Power of Now," the book we will be focusing on at CSL during the month of April, is just what the doctor ordered to help our minds let go, relax, and work out the chronic spasm of over-thinking. We can learn to trust that life is for us. NOW is where God lives and moves and has It's being. Therefore, NOW is the only place and time in which you can experience true joy and freedom. NOW is a mystical place where all your answers lie and all your needs are met. How much more perfect could that be?  Truly, the kingdom of heaven is at hand, all around us. Yet we cannot see it or experience it when our minds are jumping back and forth in time.

Right now, as you are reading this, take a deep breath. Pause and say, "I am here now." Again, breathe deeply and repeat "I am here now" a few more times. Look around your environment slowly. Observe what you see. It really is that simple to get back into the now moment. No matter how many times your mind wanders, keep bringing yourself back to the moment. You will begin to experience a peace that surpasses all understanding.

NOW you are one with God, with all good. Here and now, you are free, whole, perfect and complete. Rest your mind and let it be.

Love,

Mark Anthony Lord
SPIRITUAL PRACTICES
"These lessons are dedicated to that Truth which frees man from himself and sets him on the pathway of a new experience, which enables him to see through the mist to the Eternal and Changeless Reality."

-- SOM Textbook, Ernest Holmes

Meditation
melody.jpg

I know of a place, available to us all, that is infintely wise and immediately accessible. It is a place within each one of us where you can tap into the power and wisdom of God. You can access this place through the Spiritual Practice of Meditation.

Meditation, defined as contemplation or continuous thought, is a part of countless religions and spiritual traditions. It is recognition of the Source within us, a reconnecting with the One. When we choose to meditate, we choose the thoughtful practice of going into the silence...and listening.

Sometimes the challenge in listening to the silence is from the internal voice of ego that starts to chatter loudly - what the Buddhists call the "monkey mind" where thoughts swing widely from branches of the past to invisible vines of the future. Be assured that the more often that you connect to the One within through meditation, the more the ego's voice is diminished and the more the still, small voice within is able to resonate to a higher vibration.

Meditation can be as simple as stopping to take one deep breath or walking in nature or sitting in silence for minutes or even hours. Finding the right meditation practice can provide your life with harmony and light. A great book that explains many different forms of meditation is "Journey of Awakening" by Ram Dass. And if you are looking to deepen your knowledge of meditation, or any Spiritual Practice, check out our Spiritual Practices class which starts April 14th.

Persist in your quest to hear the voice within your being. Your truth is waiting.

GIVING - THE NEW GETTING

Meet Melody Brynne DeGagne
The Production Crew
melody.jpg
It is only fitting that someone who grew up in a musical family should be named Melody. Still writing music today, Melody was a Music major, receiving sound and recording experience. Her career took different paths, from working in the music industry to working as a midwife. But the song woven throughout her life has been one of service.

Melody believes she is "here to serve" and that belief has served her well as she faces physical challenges. On days when she wakes up needing extra strength, she suddenly finds it. She will feel lifted up and be given the energy and peace she needs. "God never lets me down. It's the power of the One that moves through me." And this power is the lesson that has become her spiritual practice.

Having grown up on a farm where she was taught to get things done, she first volunteered as Set-Up Team Leader. No one knew of her sound background but word got out and she was soon asked to join the Sound Crew who needed help. It was music to her ears. "I love it. It's like coming home."

Melody encourages others to do SEVA, saying, "If you feel called, trust it and it will stretch you." And she has been. She meets incredible people, gains new friends and creates a sense of support. Now that's music to our ears!

Editor's Apology: We misspelled last month's SEVA interviewee. Anna Dudkowska is the name our wonderful Book Store Manager. So sorry, Anna.

How Do I Become a SEVA Volunteer?
We appreciate people volunteering for a three month term. Volunteers can serve once a month but twice would be ideal. We hope to fill each team with 10-12 members so that volunteers can rotate.  Ideally, two to three of the same people each week help anchor the team, and the lead is always there. Contact Gina at gina@chicagocsl.org or in person at the SEVA Table after Sunday Service.
